Woodwind Resources
This page is for woodwind players, and should be a resource for students.
All players should ensure their instruments are in good working order at all times. In addition, the following items are necessary for each instrument (please note - links are only suggestions, and not meant to endorse any particular company or product):
Please do not purchase a lesson book ahead of time. Mr. Blostein will let you know what lesson book to purchase, if not provided by the school, once we have had a lesson or two.
(Please Note - all items can be purchased through local music stores. Links are provided simply so you can see the cover of the book. Often online retailers bundle materials.)
Flute and Piccolo:
- Cleaning Rod (should be specific to the instrument)
- Metronome - an online metronome or an app for a smartphone is an acceptable alternative most of the time.
- Tuner - an online metronome or an app for a smartphone is an acceptable alternative most of the time.
- Music Stand
Flute Major Scales with Fingerings
Oboe and Bassoon:
- A minimum of 3 working reeds. Students should rotate through their reeds (3 is sufficient to rotate) in order to always have a working reed available.
Recommended Oboe Reeds: Stuart Dunkel Reeds
Recommended Bassoon Reeds: Bel Canto Reeds
- A Cleaning Swab.
- A reed case.

Oboe Major Scales with Fingerings
Clarinet:
- A minimum of 3 working reeds. Students should rotate through their reeds (3 is sufficient to rotate, more are better) in order to always have a working reed available. Each reed should be a minimum strength of 3. Royal reeds are highly recommended - students should use strength 3 or 3 1/2.

Saxophone:

- A cleaning swab

Reeds:
Students should always have a minimum of three reeds that they use in rotation on their instruments. In addition, there should be some extra reeds always available.
Reeds may be purchased from a wide variety of resources, including John Keal Music. Online retailers are also acceptable.
